Do The Right Thing

2014 Dr. Sam Haywood Award Winner Ezra Adams and CMPD SRO J.J. Flowers

In response to rising school dropout rates and the increasing incidence of drug abuse, violence, and gang-related crimes among the youth of our community, the Charlotte Fire Department and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department have formed a partnership with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools to sponsor the Do The Right Thing program.

Do The Right Thing, Inc. is a non-profit corporation dedicated to recognizing, celebrating and rewarding youth who, in the face of overwhelming odds, exhibit character and integrity.

Together, with our community sponsors, we hope to achieve the highest level of excellence for the youth in our community by reaching common goals set forth in our mission statement.  We want to…

  • Reinforce socially desirable behavior among our youth.
  • Demonstrate that “good kids” are newsworthy kids.
  • Foster positive relationships between police officers, firefighters, and the young people of Mecklenburg County.
  • Enhance community relations between the fire department, the police department, the schools, and local businesses.
