List Of Students That Were Honored:

Christian Horne             1st Grade             J. W. Grier Elementary

Christian regularly volunteers at a senior center with his grandmother. He serves the residents beverages and talks to them.  Earlier in the year, Christian lost his dad due to cancer. Christian keeps his special memories of his dad by writing and drawing pictures and telling his teacher stories about their good times together. By volunteering himself in service to others and talking openly about his dad, Christian had developed skills that help him get through his days and weeks with a smile on his face and a loving and caring heart. Christian is an example to us all by doing the right thing in the face of adversity.

Catherine Stevens        2nd Grade     Charlotte Preparatory School

Cassie comes home from school each day and devotes her time to helping her grandmother. Cassie sits by her grandmothers’ side, reads books, watches movies and provides other companionship as needed. Cassie’s grandmother has recently been diagnosed with a very serious form of brain cancer. Never once has Cassie complained about this responsibility, nor has she ever been asked to perform this role. Sometimes when her grandmother is feeling sad about her condition and the loss of her hair, Cassie will remind her grandmother “it is not what is on the outside that matters, it I what is on the inside of the person.”  It is the bright light of this young lady that makes everything worth the effort for her grandmother.

Andrew Gilgo        4th Grade           Providence Spring Elementary

Drew is a very caring young man much like his father who was very active in the Character Education program at Providence Spring Elementary.  Drew lost his dad in a car accident two years ago. In honor of his dad, the Character Library at the school was dedicated in his memory. Drew is carrying on his dad’s legacy of showing good character even when no one is watching. At Christmas, the only thing Drew put on his list was for family members to give donations to the Make A Wish Foundation, which makes special requests come true for children with serious illnesses.

Juwan Hood                    4th Grade             Paw Creek Elementary

Juwan and other students found a wallet with nearly $200.00 and other valuable belongings inside.  Juwan noticed the student’s school identification card from Harding University. He knew this was the same school his cousin attended. Without hesitation, Juwan took the wallet home and informed his mother and cousin.  Juwan showed honesty by giving the wallet to his cousin to return to the owner.

Equistian Strickland        4th Grade        Winterfield Elementary

Equistian went around to his neighbors and family collecting money for the school character education project, Pennies for Patients. He recognized the importance of this need and people can get help from many different areas. Equistain chose to work for a service project rather than play outside with his friends.

Hermella Tekle                4th Grade          Winterfield Elementary

Hermella works hard at home and earns quite a bit of money doing chores. During the schools service project, Pennies for Patients, she brought in most of her chore money as a donation. Hermella could have spent her money on her needs, she chose to donate the money to help children with cancer.

Anthony Robert Thomas Jr.    4th Grade       J.H. Gunn Elementary

Anthony is a hero to his mother. In January, his mother became quite ill and was gasping for air. Anthony found his mother on the floor and started calling her name. Anthony got the telephone, knowing he needed to call for help. Although his mother was hardly able to talk he understood that she wanted him to call one of her friends and that she needed her inhaler. Anthony understood and took the lead to search the house for the much needed medication.  Anthony was able to stay calm enough to locate the inhaler and give it to the friend so she could assist his mother.

James Warren             4thGrade              Winterfield Elementary

James received $10.00 for a valentines gift. He gave all his money unselfishly to the character education program, Pennies for Patients. This act of caring from a fouth grader is rare. Many would have spent the money on something for themselves. Instead, James gave his money to help children with cancer.

Briana Brown               5th Grade              First Ward Elementary

Briana started a character building club for girls in her classroom. She noticed that the 5th grade boys had a club for that purpose, but the girls did not have a club specifically for character building activities. She named the club the Vasser Character Builders for Leslie Vasser, a well respected teacher from First Ward. She asked permission to meet one day a week, have motivational speakers for the girls and participate in activities to promote service to others and team building. The club meetings start in March 2007. Briana showed sincerity and willingness to help her fellow classmates with this project.

Bryan Vavela                7th Grade           Community House Middle

Bryan comes from a family with limited financial resources. He works hard to support his mother at home. Bryan pledged $5.00 of his own money for the school walk-a-thon. Bryan demonstrated character by caring and sharing with others.

Emanuel Phillip              8th Grade               J.M. Robinson Middle

When Emanuel was in the 7th grade, he was approached by his peers to join a gang. After much thought, Emanuel took it upon himself to research the CMS school system on line and had his mother put in for a transfer. He looked at websites and test scores, and thought that J.M. Robinson was the right place for him.  This alone shows his extraordinary character. Emanuel knew if he wanted to be successful in school he was going to have to leave his friends behind and start over in a better, safer environment. Emanuel is a role model for his peers. He preserves through difficult tasks, never giving up.

Phillip Young                   12th Grade             Midwood High School

Phillip has been observed by his teachers trying very hard to attend school and receive good grades. He has also been observed encouraging others to get their class work done. During an incident in the classroom, between two other students, Philip was instrumental in keeping them apart and talking the situation down until school security and administration arrived. He has become involved with school activities and is setting a good example for his peers.
