On
June 27, 2011 friends, family members, police
officers, firefighters and members of Charlotte City
Council gave East Mecklenburg High School student
Kate Speice a standing ovation during the City
Council meeting. Kate was honored with the 2011 Dr.
Andrew P. “Sam” Haywood Award, which is presented to
the overall Do the Right Thing winner each year. The
winning student is chosen for displaying exemplary
attitude and behavior, showing bravery under extreme
circumstances, or participating in outstanding
volunteer work.
Kate is a 17-year-old rising
senior. One evening this past November, Kate was
headed to the Target store in Matthews to enjoy the
evening, shopping and spending some of her
hard-earned money. As Kate entered the store, she
was focused on all the things she was planning on
purchasing. However, just as she was approaching the
front door, Kate witnessed a gentleman suddenly
collapse to the ground in front of the store. As
another bystander pulled out their phone and called
911, Kate quickly knelt down and began checking the
man’s condition. Finding no pulse or respirations,
she recognized the immediate need for CPR. Having
just completed her Life Guard recertification
training, her instincts kicked in and she began
administering life-saving chest compressions. Kate
continued to provide this crucial patient care until
the paramedics arrived.

Her
bravery and courage saved this stranger’s life. She
demonstrated incredible maturity and strength. We
honor and celebrate her courage and commitment to
doing the right thing.
Dr. Andrew P. “Sam”
Haywood was an educational advocate for all children
and their parents. He retired from
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools in 1992 as an area
superintendent and continued to show his commitment
to children through his tireless volunteer efforts
with the NC Board of Education, the school system
and Do the Right Thing organization.
