A
classmate of Tamauri’s house burned down. As the class was
discussing the situation, Tamauri offered to give some of her
toys to her friend. Tamauri showed compassion for her classmate. |

Hector Ramos Kindergarten Cornelius
Elementary
Hector is an ESL student and his family speaks very little
English. His class learned about community helpers. He had to
use the skills he learned in school to protect his mother and
little sister from an intruder in their home. He told his mother
to call 911 when an intruder came into their home as he was
watching television. His mother questioned what 911 was when
Hector told her to call for help. The police arrived quickly and
the family was safe and no items were taken from the home due to
Hector’s knowledge. He was even able to describe the intruder to
the police. Hector demonstrated courage and bravery protecting
his family. |

Matthew Tessener
Kindergarten Lake Wylie Elementary
After studying fire safety in school, Matthew, his mom and step
dad went out to dinner. After dinner, Matthew and Mr. Welborne
noticed blue flames coming from an electrical receptacle. The
problem was reported and the restaurant was evacuated. The fire
was extinguished before much damage occurred. Matthew stood
outside the restaurant and recited all the fire safety rules in
an effort to alert people in case the fire got out of control.
Matthew showed courage and did what he could so all the people
at the restaurant would be safe. |

Asia Williams 3rd
Grade Pineville Elementary
Asia
dialed 911 from her apartment to report a situation that was
going on outside that needed to be reported. Asia was very calm,
thorough and helpful. The officers were able to go to the scene
and make an arrest. Asia demonstrated good citizenship.

Treniz Cheek 4th
Grade Thomasboro Elementary
When
Treniz learned his classmate had lost all of his clothing and
belongings in a fire, he brought in bags of his own clothing, a
football and other items including a Nintendo with games. Treniz
made a big sacrifice for his classmate by showing compassion and
concern for a friend. |

Miranda Dickerson 4th
Grade Albemarle Road Elementary
Miranda
always complies with school rules, excels academically and goes
above and beyond helping her fellow peers. Without being asked,
Miranda took it upon herself to donate her lunchtime daily to a
group of mentally disabled students at her school. She felt it was
important for the boys and girls to feel welcome and know they are
an important part of the school. Miranda reads to the students and
takes the time to listen to what they have to say. Miranda shows
compassion for others. |

Mary Cruz Perez 5th

In July
2005, Mary assisted the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department with
locating the parents of a 2 year old child that had wandered away
from his apartment. Police had difficulty locating the parents, but
with Mary’s knowledge of her neighbors in the apartment complex,
police located the parents and reunited them with their toddler. |

Angelica
is a straight A student and always shows concern for others.
Recently when her mother was found unconscious, Angelica saved her
life by calling 911. Angelica showed courage and caring. |

Chris
Holley 11th Grade North

Chris
was on a cruise with his parents when the trip of a lifetime turned
quickly into an action to save his mother’s life. Chris was resting
in the cabin while his mother was eating lunch. They were talking
about the upcoming afternoon when Chris realized his mother went
silent. His mother turned to him and put her hands to her throat,
using the sign for can’t breathe. Chris jumped from the bed and
grabbed his mother and performed the Heimlich maneuver. Chris was
able to clear his mother’s airway and call for medical assistance.
Chris learned the Heimlich maneuver in the Boy Scouts. Chris showed
bravery and quick thinking. |

Patrick
Raburn 12th Grade
Olympic High
Patrick demonstrated good character, initiative and responsibility
at school. A group of students were gathered in the hallway, when an
adult noticed torn paper on the floor. The students were asked if
they would help. The group turned away and mumbled to each other.
Patrick stepped in and began to help while the other students stood
and watched. Patrick decided to be “un-cool” and do the right thing.
Chris showed good character, responsibility and initiative. |
