Glenn Luther

Reedy Creek Elementary
Glenn was shopping with his mother and two younger sisters when
his mother became ill. Glenn became aware and assisted her to
their car. Glenn, with his mother’s assistance, contacted his
father who was in Nashville on business. Glenn kept his sisters
calm while waiting for the ambulance to arrive. Glenn talked to
the 911 dispatcher giving a description of their car and was
able to turn on the cars emergency flashers, allowing the
ambulance to locate the car. Glenn showed courage and invaluable
maturity in an emergency situation.

Karmika Jackson 4th
Grade Pineville Elementary
Karmika helps a special needs child on and off the school bus
everyday. She also takes him to class and interacts with him on
a personal level. She also befriended a classmate who has vision
problems, helping her to class and finding her class materials.
Karmika is the first to volunteer to help her teacher and other
students, always without being asked. She shows character by
caring and giving to others. |

Elementary
David is a helper to an autistic student at his school. David
shows him how to do things and what to say, helping his friend
to blossom and grow in daily activities. David is also an
amazing honor roll student and president of his school
government. David continues to show leadership skills and is a
true inspiration to others at his school. |

Michael Martin 5th
Grade Selwyn Elementary
Michael suffers from autism and has had difficulties in the past
fitting into a classroom. Michael and his teacher are working on
goals and a progress chart for Michael to meet on an everyday
basis in order for him to attend a regular class fulltime. Many
children with disabilities find it easier to succumb to their
handicap and let someone else worry about their future. Michael
exemplifies dedication, determination and does not give up.

Maggie Stevens
5th Grade Beverly
Woods Elementary
Maggie learned Basic First Aid training through her school's Red
Cross Chapter. This training allowed Maggie to help her mother
when she was choking and unable to breathe. She performed the
Heimlich maneuver and saved her mother’s life.

Elementary
Adalis
has shown through her actions that she is developing strong moral
convictions in the same manner as Rosa Park and Dr. Martin Luther
King. She is not afraid to stand up for what she feels is right. She
demonstrated this when she witnessed someone stealing. She wrote,
when asked about her thoughts; “We should not steal because you will
think that you will get away with it. You will not stop stealing. No
one will believe you and nobody will be your friend. You should not
lie because lying will get you nowhere. You should not lie or steal.
If I see someone doing wrong, I will tell. Some of my friends will
not tell, but I will because it is not right.” |

Simon
showed great honesty and integrity when he turned in a wallet he
found. The wallet contained over $300.00. Simon exhibited
outstanding character by immediately reporting the lost wallet. He
knew it was the right thing to do.

Angel Acevedo 9thGrade

Angel
found a knife at his school. He quickly reported the weapon to his
teacher. Angel knew the seriousness of the weapon on school grounds
and understood the importance of the situation. Angel demonstrated
character and courage in what could have been a dangerous situation.

While
participating in an Air Force JROTC community service project at the
North Carolina Renaissance Festival, John found $3,000.00 in a paper
bag. John knew the importance of returning the money to the rightful
owner. John demonstrated citizenship and honesty in a very tempting
situation. |

Jarrell Sumter 12th
Grade Harding University High
Jarrell is an outstanding
citizen and leader; he has a positive attitude that influences
others. Jarrell witnessed another student become aggressive and
threatening toward his teacher. After security removed the unruly
student, Jarrell was the first to offer assistance and comfort to
his teacher and classmates. Jarrell showed compassion and strength
of character.
